Pete Mahon was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. After touring Scotland and Germany with the band Rico, he moved to London in the mid-70s and signed with legendary record producer Mickie Most at RAK Records. Pete later signed with Bron Publishing and released his first solo single, "Bite Me / Taste Nice," with EMI Liberty Records in 1981. Although the single received significant radio play, the A&R representative who signed Pete resigned shortly after, and promotion for the single was halted. Pete left EMI six months later and signed with Loose Records.
Pete recorded many of his tracks at Pathway Studios—renowned for numerous hits during the 1970s and 80s—though "Bite Me / Taste Nice" was recorded at TPA and Jam Studios, then mixed and mastered at the iconic Abbey Road Studios.
As a prolific songwriter, Pete has had his work recorded by various artists, including Ian Mitchell (Bay City Rollers, Rosetta Stone), Chris Thompson (Manfred Mann's Earth Band), John Howard, and Moon Williams. His engineering credits include work with Leo Sayer, Darts, Bad Manners, the Tina Turner Band, and Peter Sarstedt, among others. He also produced the iconic heavy metal band Sledgehammer, alongside various other emerging artists.
The Ian Mitchell single "Peekaboo Love" was taken from an album released exclusively in Japan in 1980, where Mitchell enjoyed immense popularity. The song was written by Pete, who, like Mitchell, grew up in Northern Ireland. Interestingly, the two didn't realise their shared roots until they were introduced at the Gioconda Café on London’s Denmark Street by producer and musician Alan Blakley. In 1981, Pete Bite recorded an album ...Clearly Misunderstood which was eventually released on Loose Records (Cat No: LSECD 15)in 2005. The band playing on these recordings were Pete Bite - vocals, bass, piano and guitars. Hal Lindes - guitars. Terry Jenkins - lead guitar on Peek-a-boo Love. Alex Baird - drums. Joe Gillingham -keyboards and backing vocals and Maureen McHugh - backing vocals. The album featured his own version of "Peekaboo Love," the same track popularised by Ian Mitchell on WEA Records in Japan. You can listen to the track below. A second single, entitled One more bite of my heart was also released on Loose Records in 1984.
Pete Bite currently performs across London, both as a solo artist and with his band. He has released numerous albums over the years and is set to release a book entitled I Fought The Law—a true story detailing one man's struggle against the police and the legal system.
